About 5 Foot Way

About Us

5 Foot Way is a supperclub and catering company based in Somerset. I am Michelle, and I set up the company with my husband, Steve. I am a self-taught British Malaysian Chinese cook. I grew up in Malaysia and honestly believe that the quality and variety of food there, due to the intercultural influences over centuries, has led to a food culture which is one of the best in the world. My parents instilled in me a passion for trying all kinds of cuisines and ingredients, and when I came to the UK to study, I taught myself to recreate the food from home. I experiment and learn new things about food constantly, and love the way international cuisines have grown and flourished since I first moved here.

My husband and I enjoy sharing authentic South East Asian and other Asian street food experiences and feeding people. Our speciality is Malaysian food but we have a broad repertoire of Chinese, Indian and other South East Asian cuisines (and we make a pretty mean roast dinner).

We hold supper clubs, cater for private events and are planning to start a weekly food-to-go / takeaway service in our local area. We also run cooking demonstrations and classes; volunteer to raise money or provide food for charity events; pop-up at festivals and markets; and collaborate with other passionate street food entrepreneurs.

Why 5 Foot Way?

A “Five Foot Way” is a covered walkway found in front of traditional two storey shophouses found all over South East Asia. These sheltered arcades provide shelter from the beating hot sun and monsoon rains. Small businesses often set up shop in these walkways selling all manner of things – from tasty snacks and spices to household paraphernalia and souvenirs. Street food stalls also thrive in these compact spaces with vendors selling their families’ inherited secret dishes, passed down from generation to generation, feeding all the locals who always have their favourite noodle stall here or satay stall there, and claim to know where the ‘best’ curry can be found. Food is not just a passion but a way of life for most South East Asians.
